The year your Walther PPK/S was made can be determined by looking at its serial number. The first two digits typically represent the year of manufacture. For example, if your serial number starts with "75," your pistol was likely made in 1975. Contents [ show] Walther began manufacture at their plant in Zella-Mehlis and produced three series of "Test" pistols, designated by a "0" prefix to the serial number. The third series pistols solved the problems for the German Army and mass production began in mid-1940, using Walther's military production identification code "480". [citation needed]

The Walther P1 is the aluminum-framed copy of the WWII Walther P38 pistol and has its own history. For 25 years these pistols served with the Bundeswehr and West German police. During the 1990s the Germans began phasing out the P1, fielding the P8 (a military version of the H&K USP), finally retiring the weapon altogether in 2004.

Well, I got an expert opinion on the P1 from the Walther forums. Basically, the serial number on my P1 is dated back to the 50s. So this gun he says likely went through a number of reworks and upgrades at the arsenal. Barrel, frame, slide would have all been replaced as the characteristics don't match a 50s era P1.26074 posts · Joined 2007. #5 · Feb 14, 2012. Since 1958 all German weapons had been marked with the German proof marks and in addition with the last two numbers of the year of proof i.e. 67 = 1967. Since 1968 the year of proof is coded by two letters. This code can be translated in the following manner:The serial number is 3341t. I wouldn't mind adding a Walther made example to the collection at some point, but German guns aren't really a focus for my collection (prices are too crazy), so I doubt I'll go out specifically looking for one.
